Get to know Scott Jones

I am currently a community college student, but before that, I completed a two-year tech school program. I started at college with some knowledge. Now, I have a lot more knowledge, which I'm hoping to delve even further into as I'm looking to transfer to a university at the beginning of 2026. At the same time, I'm also someone who has a variety of interests other than the tech world. I like to sing, write (usually short stories, though I have written and directed a short film for a school project), get up on stages and make people laugh, take (a lot of) pictures, and in general, any type of performing or activity involving being on a stage, but singing is one of my top preferences for that. Throughout this site, I will be showing my digital portfolio which will mostly consist of my work within the digital media field so go ahead, and look around.

About Scott

I am a student who had an interest in the ever-growing technology field from a young age. I always excelled in my tech classes from as early as elementary school. Whenever a presentation or some other tech assignment came up, I always thrived in them, which continued into middle and high school, especially the latter.

During my first two years in high school, I took a coding course where my school partnered with a local tech company that gave us several coding projects to complete. I was always the first one to complete the projects and therefore, the go-to student if/when another student, or even my teacher, could not figure out what to do to move on to a project's next step, and it always happened right before we were about to be done. What was even more funny was that it was always something little keeping us from moving on to the next part. Sometimes we just needed a semicolon, to put a certain word/phrase in quotations, or to get rid of the aforementioned items. No matter what it was, I always managed to get it done, which led me to receive the Technology Student of the Year award at that school year's end-of-year banquet.

I still succeeded in my tech courses in high school and/or when an assignment involved creating some type of video, but I also wanted to learn more technology skills that I knew my high school couldn't teach me and didn't have the resources to teach me (no offense to them). So, I applied and was accepted into TCHS Brandywine, a nearby high school specifically dedicated to teaching students the skills needed to thrive in a career program of their choice. I was admitted into the Digital Media program. Throughout those two years, I learned a bunch of new technology skills such as video editing, animation, music production, photography, Photoshop, film production, and a whole lot more that I don't have the time to name. Being in that program gave me a great opportunity, and after I completed that program, I went on to college.

I began at Delaware County Community College in the fall of 2023, which has been fun for the most part. Being there has allowed me to learn even more tech skills such as working with Java, coding for web design, and furthering my knowledge with Adobe Audition. I've also had some unforgettable moments such as earning all A's in a single semester, joining not one but two honor societies, and as mentioned above, getting to speak in front of a (virtual) audience about why overnight camp is awesome (which is where that headshot was taken). My time at DCCC has been stressful at times, but overall, has been a blast, even if it's all been online.

As of when I wrote this, I'm currently set to complete my Associate degree at the end of this year and am looking at planning to transfer to a university at the beginning of 2026, which I'm super excited about. In the meantime, look around, feel free to let me know what you think using my contact form, and if you've made it to the end of this, thank you!

Personal Reflection Statement

When I first started my Digital Portfolio Development course, which to be honest with all of the viewers who will read this statement, is the main reason why I put together this portfolio website, my first thought was “This is gonna be great!” because I have been a student in the tech field for over five years now, and knew that I had pieces of work in various aspects of the tech world that would help represent me best on this site.

However, I’ve learned quite a few things since I started developing this website, and I’ll start with the things that aren’t the most positive. I’ve learned that there are several parts of the tech field that certainly pay a lot of money that I am not good at. I’m not that great in music production, even though I love music and to sing. I’ve learned that I would rather be the one to sing a completed song, rather than creating an entire beat from scratch. The thought of putting together an animation project makes me want to rip out the hair I don’t have. When I had to do an animation project during my two-year tech school program prior to starting at DCCC, I got by the first time because the first project had the basics of one character and 20 second run time and so on. The second time, I sucked, and I can openly admit that, because I did not meet a majority of the criteria, but then again, I genuinely did not care because I have no interest in being an animator. If I was going to take part in an animation project, I’d want to be the one voicing a character. I don’t feel the same about Photoshop, but I can openly admit that some of the examples I’ve included here were ones that I made by following a step-by-step guide of some sort. Despite all of this, there are some positive things I’ve learned.

In the five years since I first started being a tech student, I’ve learned that when I put my mind to it, I’m great at putting together a video editing project. Video editing in general is one of my strengths because I’m the kind of person that will watch a video project from start to finish multiple times to make sure that there aren't any mistakes such as timing issues, media that’s not sized to fit the screen, a transition that transitions too slow or too quick etc. Plus, I’ve learned that I genuinely enjoy video editing, so when I had to put together a documentary project for my tech school program, I was thrilled. What I love about video editing (and making a documentary) is having full control over what it’ll look like, what I get to say in the video, what media I will include, and getting to base it on a topic of something or someone I enjoy. For example, the documentaries I included in this portfolio website were ones that I did either for tech school/in college and were on topics that I chose because I have loved Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, and Disney since I was a child.

I kind of already mentioned this, but I’ve learned that I am also great at narrating. I like getting to narrate a project, getting to be the person that is informing the viewer, but also getting to throw in a little humor in there to keep the viewer interested/engaged, because I’ve watched videos before where the person just talks and talks, leaving me bored out of my mind. Plus, if you think about it, narrating is another form of designing. You can design your narrative to be engaging but humorous at times like myself, or design it to just be informative, leaving the chances that you’ll lose your audience to increase. I like to design my narrative to be engaging.

This leads me to the last part of this statement. I’ve learned that in general, I love designing. Whether that’s designing (and creating) a documentary, the Computing Science logos I’ve included in here, a social media post, etc. I love designing and that’s the strength I wanna end this statement with. I’ve learned that designing is one of my biggest strengths because I like getting to make the design look exactly how I want it to, being able to incorporate any and everything I want to include, and getting to have it reflect my vision. When I’m designing, this is usually where I excel and get a positive response from whoever I’m sharing a design with, because I genuinely enjoy designing and therefore, can put together a pretty great design in a short amount of time. So, while I may not be a songwriter that can write a hit song in 10 minutes, I can put together a hit design in that same amount of time.

I would like to end this reflection by saying that I may not be the most skilled in some of the highly competitive parts of the technology field, but I’m okay with that because in the parts that I am great at, I’ve been able to accomplish a lot and set myself up for a bright future.
